Psalm 34:8 – Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!
I remember sitting at the kitchen table for meals when I was very young, maybe about six years old. I liked and would eat almost everything that my mother served. That is except pears and okra.
They were menu items that I especially disliked and I felt that I could do without them.
If I spooned fruit cocktail into my mouth, and there was some pear on the spoon the fruit cocktail would soon come back out the same way that it went in. They just would not stay where they were placed.
My mother accommodated my dislike for pears. She would remove the pears from my cup, and I would happily eat what was left. On the other hand, she would insist that I eat the okra. Mother would always say, “It’s good for you, learn to like it”.
So, I learned to like it. That is probably how I developed such a discerning palate! Imagine this! Pears are my favorite fruit now, and okra is my most sought-after side dish at restaurants.
Lately, I’ve begun drinking green tea, with no sweetener. I have a sweet tooth, so it doesn’t taste that great to me yet. There are cultures that benefit and enjoy bitter tasting chocolate in foods and beverages.
So, I’ll give the green tea a chance to win me over. I’m not quite ready to get on the dark chocolate craze though.
There are bible verses that give us pause before we get any understanding from them. I encourage you to put forth extra effort in getting to understand what may seem to be vague scriptures. They’re good for you!
Heavenly Father, just as my mother’s timeless advice about certain foods was right… Your Word is true. May we commit to taste and see that you are Good. We are blessed because we trust in You. Amen.
