Matthew 24:35 – Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.”
The town in which I live is a vibrant fast-growing town, with many new people arriving every day. With their arrival, many things are changing. However, the streets that bear the names of men and women from long ago, remain.
Being a native of this town, I knew many of the people who these streets were named after. This knowledge is not known by most of the new arrivals.
Take one bright sunny Sunday morning, for instance. We were driving the same route to church as usual, but I was not thinking of the usual things. My thoughts seemed to wander as though I was in a daze.
I glanced over at a small apartment complex that bore the name of one great man, who had long passed away. I was reminded of the scripture that said – “Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph.”
I am sure that many of the occupants, or those new residents of the city do not know, nor have they ever heard of the man whose name this complex bears. He once served as mayor of this bustling city. Imagine that!
He also owned a renowned business near downtown that bore his name. The building that housed that business, and his name; the name of his ancestors is now gone. All that is left to remind us of this great man now is a short, paved access road, in front of an apartment complex that we were driving past right now.
Much of what we know now is merely a remnant of what once was. Many things are just not there anymore. Things seem to have vanished! They are just gone.
This leaves me with one simple question.
What about the works that you have done? Tell me whether you think that your works are eternal. Tell me that they will last. Maybe they are only like many other things that we do?
They came to pass.
They happened, and now they are no more.
God forbid!
Let us do the work for which God sent us!
Our Father in heaven. I want to do your will today. Lead me, guide me. I will obey, because I know that your commands will not pass away. Amen.
